Overview
A 5-day, 4-night safari combining the Maasai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania is a highly condensed but thrilling journey. This itinerary is designed for travelers with limited time who want to experience the absolute best of both of these world-famous wildlife destinations. It’s a logistical challenge but, when planned correctly, offers an incredible opportunity to see the heart of the Great Migration (at the right time of year) and a huge diversity of wildlife..
Destinations: The two most famous parks in the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem:
Kenya: Maasai Mara National Reserve.
Tanzania: Serengeti National Park.
Key Highlights:
Maasai Mara: Known for its vast, rolling grasslands, high density of predators, and the spectacular river crossings of the Great Migration (typically July-October).
Serengeti: Famous for its “endless plains,” huge herds of animals, and one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.
Logistics: The main challenge of this itinerary is the cross-border travel. There is no direct border crossing within the parks themselves. To get from the Maasai Mara to the Serengeti (or vice versa), you must travel to a designated international border post. The most common route is via the Isebania border, which is a long but manageable drive, or by taking a combination of light aircraft flights.
